The Weevil In The Biscuit

Logline:

Sick and almost bankrupt in his Westbourne house, Robert Louis Stevenson writes The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in three days then burns it.

Summary:

Sickly Stevenson is inspired by a dream which soon becomes a supernatural nightmare. Bedridden, he feverishly writes “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” in three days then burns the first version. Over the next ten weeks the almost bankrupt Stevenson, who is regularly embattled with his whirlwind wife, writes with superhuman energy until his masterpiece is complete, likening the creative demon inside him to that ‘pallid brute,’ the Edward Hyde within living in upright sobriety like ‘a weevil in a biscuit.’
